Sea Cucumber is a long creature that lives in the ocean’s floor all around the
world, “especially in the Indian and western Pacific oceans” [1]. They call it sea cucumber because it look like a soft bodied cucumber or we can describe it as a giant
worm. Actually it is more similar to starfish and sea urchins.
In Asia, they like to cook the sea cucumber and eat it. In addition, it
is a regular part of many people's diet. Thus, they sold it dried
in many markets. In Fact, it is safe for human consumption.
“Sea cucumbers feed on tiny particles like algae, minute aquatic animals, or
waste materials, which they gather in with 8 to 30 tube feet that look like tentacles surrounding their mouths. The animals breakdown these particles into even smaller pieces, which become fodder for bacteria, and thus recycle them back into the ocean ecosystem. Earthworms perform a similar function in terrestrial ecosystems.” [2]
Scientists discovered in 2011 that sea cucumber is able to kill the cancer cells and stop it from spreading all over the body. It was used in China as a medicine. Moreover, it
can kill “95% of breast cancer cells, 95% of liver cancer cells, 90% of
melanoma cells, and 85-88% of three different types of lung cancer”. [3]
Sea Cucumber is made up from thousands of chemicals, so if you are allergic to sea food make sure you avoid it.
